It’s a popular sport that has produced some Olympic athletes from the Northland: Curling.

In this week’s Great Outdoors we stop in at the Superior Curling Club.

It’s a hobby that has been helping people pass the winter months in Superior for more than a century.

“We have been curling here in Superior since 1893, so over 120 years now,” said Superior Curling Club President Irvin Mossberger.

The club has modernized a bit since then, now playing indoors.

“We are just trying to continue the traditions that people have set over the years and have some fun,” said Mossberger.

The activity is perfect for a broad age range including 9-99.

“The goal is to get your rocks closer to the center of the target than the other team. Then you count the number of the rocks you get closer and then that’s your score for that end or inning,” explained Mossberger.

A rock, a slick pad for the bottom of your shoe, and a broom are the only equipment you’ll need to play.

“If you sweep in front of the rock it makes it go straighter and farther,” said Mossberger.

The average game takes 2-hours to complete.

“There are four people on a team and you alternate throwing the rocks,” explained Mossberger.

It’s a social event, especially for those who join a club and play weekly.

“I think that’s the most fun part is the relationships people form with other members of their team and the other teams. It’s just a nice way to pass the winter away,” said Mossberger who has been playing since he was a child.

If you’re interested in trying out the sport head to Superior Curling Club Wednesday or Thursday, November 4-5 between 6:00-8:00p.m., to try out the hobby for free.
