A mild winter last year could help area hunters looking to shoot that 12-point buck this weekend.
The 16-day deer hunting rifle seasons begins this Saturday, November 7th and run continuously in the Northern part of the State.
Last season Minnesota hunters snagged 140,000 deer statewide.
Department of Natural Resources Officials said 2015 will be a conservative hunting season as the DNR works to rebuild the size of the state’s Whitetail herd.
Most hunters will only be allotted one deer, similar restrictions last year made it the state’s most conservative hunting season in 20-years.
Around 145,000 deer are estimated to be shot.
Safety is always a main concern when hunters head into the woods.
Obvious tips include wearing blaze orange, being certain not only of your target but also what is beyond your target.
Be sure to treat every gun as if it was loaded and be sure to follow rules and regulations, including whether you have a doe or buck permit.
Danger can also exist prior to getting into your deer stand.
“The biggest thing is probably deer stand safety. There’s a lot of people that can fall it can be dangerous we certainly recommend that people wear safety harnesses and there are even life lines to protect you and that sort of thing while you’re climbing the tree as well and all of those things are good as well,” said Chris Balzer a DNR Wildlife Area Manager.
If you’re not a hunter but hope to enjoy the outdoors the next two-weeks you’re also asked to take some safety precautions.
Be aware of your surroundings and if you plan to hike in a wooded area, be sure to have some form of orange on so you’re spotted from a distance.
