Superior Police Pay it Forward

Superior Police officers were pulling people over in a secret sting operation, but they weren’t stopped for what you think.
Fox 21 had the exclusive story Thursday.
Seeing those flashing blue and red lights behind you is enough to ruin anyone’s day.
“Nick Alexander, I’m the Chief of Police.”
But with Thanksgiving right around the corner, Superior Police weren’t stopping people to hand out tickets.
Instead, what seemed like bad luck, turned out to be a blessing for many drivers.
“The reason I stopped you today is because I’m out doing random acts of kindness,” said Chief Alexander.
Superior Police Chief Nick Alexander handed over a $25 gift card to a local retailer, restaurant or gas station as part of a special holiday sting operation.
The department has more than 85 gift cards to give away to the community.
The money was donated by the Garrett Carr Memorial and Rex Kern Memorial Organizations.
Carr passed away in a tragic hunting accident in 2012, and Kern passed away in 2009.
To keep their memories alive, the groups are paying it forward and asked the police department to give back to the community in a positive way.
“With everything going on these days with social media and police, we thought we could help them out and do this for them,” said Craig Sutherland, with the Garrett Carr Memorial.
An officer’s mission is to help citizens in their time of need, and this was no different as the Superior Police Department sought out those who may need a little extra holiday cheer.
“I’m just starting this job and oh my god, I can’t believe. Oh my god.”
“well you can go and get some groceries or warm food or something,” said Alexander.
The gesture not only benefited the unsuspecting citizens, but the police department too.
“I think this will help serve a purpose to humanize us a little bit, especially in light of recent event that have drawn criticism to law enforcement,” said Alexander.
The Superior Police Department and Douglas County Sheriff’s Office will be giving away half of the 85 gift cards now, and the other half closer to Christmas.
Team Carr will be holding the 4th Annual Garrett Carr Ice Fishing tournament on January 9 at Kimball’s Bay.
A fundraising event will be held on December 5th at 6 p.m. at Tavern 105 to raise money for the ice fishing tournament.
