Duluth Firefighters Cook Christmas Dinner

Duluth firefighters working over Christmas, don’t get to spend the holidays with their families, but that doesn’t stop them from enjoying the day.

Every year, Rescue One cooks up a traditional Christmas dinner for the fire staff working the holiday.

Robert Morehouse, a Duluth Firefighter has been cooking up his famous prime rib for the holiday dinner for the past three years.

Morehouse says his fellow firefighters are a second family, they always have each other’s back and are always around each other.

“You’re put into positions that most people will not be put into outside of the military,” Morehouse said. “You already have that care for one another.”

Preparing a holiday meal together allows the Firefighters to enjoy Christmas, even though they’re working.

“A lot of different personalities that you grow really close to, and they become your friends and family,” Duluth Fire Captain, Kevin Haney said.

For these firefighters cooking isn’t anything new.

“We’ve got a rotation of rigs that cook and hopefully there’s someone on that night that knows how to cook,” Captain Hainey said.

He added, “Those that get hired that don’t know how to cook get a crash course in it.”

Firefighters at Rescue One put in long hours to maintain Duluth’s safety.

“We work a 24 hour schedule so we start at 7 in the morning and we work til 7 the next morning,” Haney said.

The firefighters never know when that next meal will be available, just like this Christmas.

Rescue One was just sitting down to their Christmas dinner, when another call for service came in, and out the door they went.
