January Declared “Trafficking Awareness Month” in Duluth

Duluth Mayor Emily Larson officially declared January “Trafficking Awareness month” in the city with a proclamation in Trepanier Hall.

The event kicked off with a red shawl healing ceremony from members of the Fon du Lac Tribe.

Along with the Mayoral Proclamation, community leaders discussed issues surrounding human trafficking in the Northland, as well as ways to address the problem.

“It’s expanding rather than getting better. We really need to focus on the demand side of the equation if we’re going to make a dent in it,” said Maude Dornfield, Executive Director of Lifehouse.

Experts say the issue of human trafficking often goes unnoticed by the general public, and awareness campaigns are essential for putting an end to the problem.
