Places for Homeless to Stay Warm
Finding Somewhere Warm to Stay isn't Always an Easy Task
For many people finding someplace warm to stay during the winter months isn’t an easy task.
There are a number of shelters in the Duluth/Superior area willing to help all those who need it.
The people who help those in need say homelessness brings a sense of loneliness that can destroy the core of a person’s self–value.
During the winter months this can be even worse.
CHUM is a shelter located in Duluth where many homeless go to seek warmth during the winter months.
During these cold months Chum doesn’t turn anybody away, even if that means some have to sleep on the floor.
Deb Holman, street outreach worker at Chum says, “Anyone who is homeless in Duluth; seeking shelter can come to the Chum for shelter. We aren’t going to turn anyone away in this weather.”
Loaves and fishes also takes in homeless individuals, and has two separate houses. One for women and children, and the other for single men. On top of hospitality work, Loaves and Fishes also offers some community activities. Coming up this month, Community Connect, will offer those who are homeless or poor a chance to get winter gear.
Drew Anderson, living volunteer for Loaves and Fishes says, “People can come to the event and have haircuts, get winter gear and there will be connections to resources throughout the area.”
Winter season feels extra–long when you are living on the streets or sleeping in a car. T
here is a big risk of hypothermia or frostbite just from staying outside for such long periods of time.
The unfortunate truth is there are still some who won’t make it to the shelters.
If you see someone homeless and want to help please call the Duluth outreach number at 218–461–8505.
