Great Lakes Pond Hockey Classic in Superior

20 Teams Laced Up to Play Outdoor Hockey

Hockey players have laced up for the 12th annual Great Lakes Pond Hockey Classic being held in Superior.

The Pond hockey classic is the most important fundraiser for the Superior Amateur Hockey Association, and is a tournament that is played over 3 days and nights.

Organizers say the annual event is about getting back to the roots of hockey

“You know you get down there with your friends you shovel off the rink and you just play until it gets dark out and you can’t play anymore,” said Jason Rauner the Director of Pond Hockey for SAHA,.

But this year Due to weather and ice conditions, the tournament was moved from Barkers Island in Superior to the outdoor rinks outside of the superior Ice Arena,

Even with the location change, 20 teams put their skates on to play the game that they love

“As I watch these guys play there’s a lot of high end play going on this year, said Rauner.

A team, Gopher Rejects says they started playing in the tournament in their early 20’s, and have been playing now for 12 years.

They hope to keep playing the sport that has become iconic to the Northland for years to come,
