Justice Department Files Lawsuit against Ferguson

U.S. Attorney General Loretta Lynch announced Wednesday that the Department of Justice is suing the city of Ferguson.

For months, the Justice Department had negotiated a deal with the City of Ferguson over reforms to it’s police force and court system.

On Tuesday, the Ferguson City Council voted to change the terms of deal, prompting the Department of Justice filing on Wednesday.

Ferguson has been under Justice Department scrutiny since the officer-involved shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown.  A grand jury and the Justice Department declined to prosecute Officer Darren Wilson.

However, a Justice Department review was critical of police and the profit-driven municipal court system in Ferguson.

A spokesman for the city of Ferguson says officials have not yet seen the lawsuit, and they plan to comment on Thursday.
