Fire Rips Through Gloria Dei Lutheran Church
Damage Estimated At $900,000
The Gloria Dei Lutheran Church has been the home of many members over the 147 years since it was constructed 1906.
The church affected many and has been a pillar in the Central Hillside community since the parish was founded in 1870 by Swedish immigrants.
Church member Duane Stucke has been taking in what is left of his church.
“It devastates me,” said Stucke, who has been a part of the congregation since the 1980s.
The grieving process starts and for the first time since moving to Duluth, Duane refers to himself as homeless.
“I’ve been a member since I moved to Duluth. Prayers are welcomed for rebuilding.” Stucke said.
Like Duane, many church members and onlookers stopped by their house of worship to spread condolences and take in damage.
“Damage…there’s a lot of damage. We don’t have an exact number for that yet.” Duluth Assistant Fire Chief Clint Reff said.
“We are just grateful for the community reaching out and also your prayers.” Pastor Dave Carlson said.
Despite the devastating fire, the message of the church remains intact and is stronger than ever.
“We know the Lord walks with us. “The God Of Jacob is our strong hold.We cling to that faith we cling that faith. Knowing that there is a promise of new life and resurrection.” Carlson said.
