Birkie Adaptive Skiing

Para-athletes Compete in Famous Race

Right after the family ski tour at the American Birkebeiner, the Birkie adaptive ski event brought in skiers from all levels of ability.

The race featured para-athletes who skied in three categories: the sit ski; visual impaired; and the standing adaptive. The race also creates a community among the skiers who look forward to competition.

“I started participating four years ago. I had a traumatic brain injury and I started working with a disabled veterans team and that’s how I got involved in it,” said Steve, an adaptive skier.

Those involved in adaptive skiing said it helps them stay in shape and that the cheers from the crowd make it all worthwhile.
