Virginia Seeks Funds to Demolish Old, Abandoned Houses

Virginia’s battle against blight continues as they seek out funds to demolish old dilapidated houses where the conditions are so bad, they can’t be repaired.

The plans to get rid of the unwanted properties are part of a revitalization project that has been going on for the last several years. Funds from the Iron Range Resources and Rehabilitation Board help pay for the demolition of the residential properties.

Those available to be torn down must be either tax forfeited, relinquished by the owner, or bought from the owner.

“It opens up the neighborhood. The neighbors are grateful for that and then they should not have to sit there day after day and watch out their deck or kitchen window. The fact this house is dilapidated and can fall apart at any time. It’s a fire hazard and it’s a worry, a concern for them and it’s a big relief when those houses are removed,” said Virginia Mayor Larry Cuffe.

Once a property is removed, the lots are often offered for sale to adjacent neighbors and Virginia has even donated some land to Habitat for Humanity projects.

Once approved for funding, four properties are scheduled to be torn down later in 2016.
