Wisconsin Senator Bewley Visits Fraser Shipyards
With the shipping season over, a few ships remain in the Twin Ports for their winter layup.
Fraser Shipyards and Northern Engineering in Superior are working on the Herbert C. Jackson. The ship’s original engine since 1958 is being replaced with one that’s EPA compliant and more fuel efficient.
The big job grabbed the attention of Wisconsin Senator Janet Bewley of Ashland.
“The fact that many local people are working on board this ship….it’s keeping people employed, it puts us on the map and it’s part of the great maritime economy industry of northern Wisconsin and I just wanted to see it,” Bewley said.
About sixty are working on repairing the ship. It should be ready to set sail again in June with loads of coal and taconite.
