More Housing Coming to Duluth

State grant helps get $13 million project started.

Officials have named housing as one of the biggest challenges facing Duluth. To address the problem, the city unveiled a future development with 72 housing units.

A state grant of one million dollars made the proposed development a reality. The District at Miller Hill will cost around thirteen million dollars to construct.

A partnership with PLB Properties made the grant possible and ground could break as early as the summer or fall.

“The developers can’t make it without additional funding coming in. So the deed grant is an enormous boon to us in developing housing,” said St. Louis County Commissioner Frank Jewell.

The city received around twenty letters from area businesses asking them to look into adding more housing for their employees.

It’s been estimated that Duluth adds one thousand jobs each year.

“It’s helpful to build one or two homes at a time but certainly building projects of 72 units or greater is something that moves us boldly forward,” said Duluth Chamber Council President David Ross.

The new housing project will target households whose annual income is between $27,000 to $50,000, but will have no income restrictions.

It will feature one and two bedroom units. Rent is slated to start at $900 with utilities included.
