Community Members Celebrate Leap Year Birthdays

Leap Year Comes Once Every 4 Years

2012 was the last time people born on February 29th had an official birthday.

Mary Mekitalo was born 84 years ago today, but she says she’s actually 21.

“It’s not everybody who can turn 21 every, you know, who has two 21s,” said Mekitalo.

And her drink of choice for her big 21?

“My brandy seven,” said Mekitalo.

She celebrated her birthday surrounded by friends and family. She also received dozens of roses, which are her favorite flowers, and cupcakes decorated with roses.

But it’s not just people. Austin Jarrow Sports is a company that opened 32 years ago today, but because they opened on a leap year, technically, the business is only seeing its 8th Opening anniversary Day.

“We have a sale every year, and it’s usually on the 28th or the 1st or both, but since we have a 29th this year, we can concentrate everything on the 29th,” said Jarrow Wahman, the co-owner of Austin Jarrow.

The next leap year won’t be until 2020.
