Minnesota Senate Discusses The Right To Die
The Bill Is Called "The Compassionate Care Act"
It was an emotional day at the Capitol in St Paul Wednesday where advocates and opponents discussed the bill by Minnesota Senator Chris Eaton, and terminally ill patients’ right to die.
Dan Diaz, husband of Brittany Maynard, who legally took her own life to end her battle with brain tumors in 2014, was one of the advocates. Diaz says Minnesotans should also have that right to choose.
“Blindness, paralysis … that was what was waiting for her. And Brittany simply said– I will not die that way,” said Diaz.
The Minnesota Bill would allow certain terminally ill patients with six months to live, to legally end their lives with medication. An evaluation from 2 doctors before hand, would be a requirement. But opponents say legalizing assisted suicide could lead to elder abuse and euthanasia.
Facing a large amount of opposition, Senator Eaton tabled the bill for further discussion next year.
