The first two U.S.-flag lakers will leave the Duluth-Superior harbor Tuesday, kicking off the 2016 shipping season.

The Edwin H. Gott and the Philip R. Clark are scheduled to leave the port, and head to Two Harbors.

Both vessels will proceed across Lake Superior toward Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan to wait in line for the Soo Locks to open.

The locks are scheduled to open at 12:01 a.m. on Friday, March 25.

The Paul R. Tregurtha is scheduled to load coal on Thursday before departing for the St. Clair Power Plant in Michigan.

The Port will welcome its first two inbound lakers over the weekend with anticipated arrivals of the Stewart J. Cort and the Burns Harbor on Saturday.  The first Canadian laker is expected to arrive in the Northland early next week.
