Beach Boys To Highlight 50 Years Of The DECC

The Convention Center Opened In 1966

This summer, the Duluth Entertainment Convention Center will be celebrating its 50th birthday.

The DECC, or The Duluth Arena Auditorium at the time, opened in 1966.

Since the opening half a century ago, the DECC has expanded by quite a bit, currently at almost 1 million square feet.

Representatives of the DECC said they’re proud of the versatility of the space, and its contributions to the city of Duluth.

“We’re just as likely to have the eagles play a concert, or a graduation, or a father daughter dance, and we take great pride in that,” said Dan Russell, the Executive Director of the DECC.

On August 6th of this year, the DECC will be holding a celebration to commemorate the opening of what is now an icon in the city.

The event will include a community open house where visitors can give themselves self-guided tours, and an all-employee reunion open to anyone who has ever worked at the DECC

“When you consider that currently there are approximately 500 employees here at the DECC, and we are 50 years old, we’ve had tens of thousands of employees,” said David Ross, the president of the Duluth Chamber of Commerce.

Last but not least, the day will end with a concert featuring the Beach Boys and Temptations. The Beach Boys was the first band to play in the DECC in 1966.

Tickets for the concert go on sale at 10 A.M on Friday April 1st at the usual DECC ticket outlets.
