Teacher Assault Bill Meets Fierce Opposition in State Senate
A state Senate proposal that would require school boards to expel any student who assaults a teacher is receiving strong opposition.
The Senate Education Committee heard Republican Sen. David Brown’s bill Thursday. The measure would give school boards the discretion for how long to expel a student who assaults a teacher.
Opponents testified that the definition of assault was too vague and that the measure would disproportionately affect students of color and students with disabilities. They also said the bill takes control out of the hands of local school boards.
Brown said his intent is to protect teachers and to send a message that attacks are not tolerated.
The committee did not vote on the proposal Thursday.
