Ely Outfitters Introduce New Motorized Paddle

The Paddle You Can Use Without Paddling

A new invention in Ely could allow outdoor enthusiasts and canoeists to paddle with style and ease.

A group of outfitters in Ely put their heads together for an innovative product that could change the future of paddle sports.

Paddle sports like canoeing, kayaking or standup paddle boarding usually require people to flex a little muscle to move forward, but a new invention in Ely is taking the industry by storm.

“It’s a light weight battery pack that’s easy to portage.  It goes down to a small propeller next to the paddle,” said John Scheifelbein, the Original Owner and Manager of North Country Canoe Outfitters.

The Original Ely Electric Paddle makes it possible for canoes to move swiftly through the water without actually having to paddle.

“You just put it in the water and it appears as if you’re paddling, so it’s good for photography but you don’t have to put out any effort at all,” said Schiefelbein.

Creators said the paddle was made with places that don’t allow motorized watercrafts, like the Boundary Waters Canoe Area, in mind, so that both active and sedentary outdoor lovers can enjoy the beauty of the Northland with little effort.

“Right now it’s a day use item, we hope to get it approved for temporary use in the boundary waters, but the jury is still out on that one,” said Schiefelbein.

Related industries will also benefit from this paddle, according to an Ely fishing guide, Jim Orcutt.

“You don’t have to worry about exercising too much, just get that sucker going and you don’t have to worry too much about sweating in the summer,” said Orcutt.
