Report: Minnesota ID upgrade may run $5 Million

Upgrading driver’s licenses to satisfy the federal government could cost up to $5 million.

That’s according to a report obtained by the Associated Press.

Minnesota lawmakers have clashed for years with the federal government over Real ID and the prospect of disrupted domestic flights if Minnesota doesn’t comply. The Legislature recently repealed a 2009 law banning compliance with the law and ordered a study on the costs and time required for the upgrade.

The Department of Public Safety’s report says it may cost between $4.3 million and $5.1 million to make the changes this year.  Legislative leaders are pushing to have the new licenses in the place by this fall.

Lawmakers were to get a look at the report Friday.
