Airport Moving Forward With Plans for Reconsturcting Runway

Construction Begins in June

Runway 9/27 is the longest and most used runway at Duluth International Airport. The pavement is 60 years old and is in need of replacement.

The initially proposed reconstruction plan would have closed the runway for 2 months in 2016, which posed a problem for AAR, an aircraft maintenance facility located at the airport.

A new solution was reached where the first phase of the reconstruction project will be broken in to 2 phases. 1A and 1B. Phase 1A is around 20% of the total project and is scheduled to start June 1st, and end June 22nd

Phase 1b is scheduled for summer of 2017, and phases 2 and 3 are still being discussed.

The new construction schedule allows phase one to be completed while the 148th fighter wing is deployed.
