City of Superior Honors Workers Memorial Day
Planting a Tree to Remember Those Lost
The city of Superior is honoring lives lost on the job with the planting of a tree.
April 28 is Worker Memorial Day, a day of remembrance for workers who have lost their lives or have been severely injured in the workplace.
The tree planting took place at Hammond Park in Superior Wednesday morning.
As well as observing the day for mourning, those at the event say it also is a reminder that safety is key to a successful work environment.
“Anybody that’s in the workplace expects to get up in the morning and go to work,” said Greg Olson, president of the Superior City Council. “And sometimes they don’t. So we stress the fact that we need to be safe in the workplace.”
Olson says the tree represents rebirth and hope.
“We’ve been doing this for seven years over here,” he said. “And every year we have people that come and hope that we won’t have to come back again.”
This day of remembrance has been observed nationwide since 1989.
