Wild Fire Causes Evacuations On the Iron Range

The Fire Started On Friday.

The smell of smoke was in the air in Hoyt Lakes, where a wild fire was reported on Friday.

“You see these black clouds of smoke billowing miles away, over the course of like two hours or something it covered the entire town,” said Edge Norenberg, a resident of Hoyt Lakes.

Multiple Fires strung out over about three miles from East of Hoyt Lakes to West of Skibo Road.

The combination of high temperatures and low humidity added to the challenge as firefighters tried to put the fire out.

When high gusts of wind and heavy smoke forced some of the helicopters to land, crews of fire engines, bulldozers and firefighters continued to work from the ground to contain the fire.

2 to 3 residences, 6 to 9 seasonal cabins and northland village assisted living were evacuated.

“We evacuated 18 residents to the aurora community center on buses with the help of northland village staff family, fire department volunteers,” said Camille Coy, the RN Manager of Northland Village Assisted Living.

Those evacuated are now safely back in their homes, but officials are unsure of how long it will take to completely put out the fire.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
