Pollution Threats in Saxon Harbor
Coast Guard responds to flooding
Coast Guard, federal, state, and local first responders are responding to pollution threats from the flooding in Saxon Harbor, Wisconsin, along the shores of Lake Superior, Wednesday.
Initial reports indicate a number of damaged and sunken boats within the area, due to the massive destruction from Monday night’s storm.
Coast Guard pollution responders from Marine Safety Unit Duluth have been on the scene to assess the situation with assistance from the U.S. Forest Service, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Iron County Sheriff’s office, and iron County representatives.
A hazard remains until fuel, oils, and hazardous substances on board the damaged boats are identified and mitigated. Responders are implementing a plan to address the environmental impact.
Boaters in the area are urged to exercise caution due to significant debris and unknown hazards to navigation in the area.
