Nazi Emblem Gifted to Veterans Center in Superior

War Trophy Brought Back from WWII

A Nazi emblem brought back to the United States following World War II will now be on display at a military museum in Superior, Wisconsin.

The chromium eagle was used as a decoration in Adolph Hitler’s personal train.

When it came to the United States, it was on display at the Douglas County Historical Society.

Years ago the emblem was stolen, and it was recently recovered at an antique shop in Eveleth.

Now the Douglas County Historical Society has gifted it to the Bong Veterans Historical Center in Superior.

“[It] tells a story right from the symbol,” said museum curator Briana Fiandt. “You don’t need a lot of background and reading to understand what that means. It definitely captures people’s attention.”
Veterans Center Executive Director Bob Furman says he is well aware of the negative connotations with Nazi imagery and the swastika.

They say it’s important to preserve it as a symbol of human history and military history.

“It gives us the chance to try to explain it within the context of its history as opposed to being used as a symbol of hate that we see today,” Furman said.
