Kansas City Officer Dead Following Shooting
Second officer to be shot this year
An officer with the Kansas City, Kansas Police Department was and killed Tuesday afternoon shot while responding to a 911 call that at least three people were shooting from a vehicle.
Officials confirmed that Captain Robert Melton was pronounced dead at University of Kansas Hospital at 2:55 p.m.
Suspects fled when officers arrived, and one of them was arrested. The officer was shot nearly 20 minutes after the initial call, while trying to make contact with the second suspect.
Tuesday’s shooting is the second Kansas City officer to be shot this year. The last being in May when a police detective was shot and killed near Kansas Speedway.
