Hibbing Homicide Victim Remembered

Vigil Held to Honor Jaysen Greenwood

Mariah Keehl couldn’t believe it when she first heard the news.

Her former boyfriend, Jaysen Greenwood, was dead and his body found in the Mott Pitt area in Mt. Iron.

“I was in total denial because I would never think something like that would happen to him,” says Keehl.

Many who knew Greenwood describe him as kind, always putting others before himself, and striving to put a smile on the face of everyone around him.

“He was always in a good mood,” Carl Emerson, Greenwood’s former roommate, recalls. “Always. Always happy.”

Keehl believes there may have been some hard feelings between Greenwood and the suspect, 19-year-old Dylan Gilbertson, also from Hibbing.

“When they first said it was Jaysen, the suspect was the first person I thought about,” says Keehl.

As she grieves with her friends, family, and Greenwood’s family, she remembers a simple message from his stepmother.

“She said, you were the love of his life … and no one can take that away from you, and that’s something you and him will only share,” Keehl quoted.

She’s repeating the words of Greenwood’s stepmom, who Keehl was close to.

“It made me feel a lot better because that’s something I’ll only have with him, and nobody else, so it was a lot easier after she said that to me.”

Authorities have named Gilbertson as the suspect in the homicide.  He is being held in the St. Louis County Jail and is expected to be formally charged on Tuesday.
