Hundreds Without Power in Island Lake

High Winds Leave Miles of Power Lines Down

Nearly 1,000 Cooperative Light and Power members in the greater Island Lake area were without power today, as high winds from Tuesday night’s storm destroyed miles of power lines.

CLP crews worked straight through the night and called in 10 additional crews from outside the area to assist in the restoration of power.

An update on the situation from around 3 p.m. today, a large section of lines are back up on Andler Road. 200 or so consumers are still without power. Carey and Breezy Point Roads are likely to be without power until Thursday.

Crews will continue to work until all power is restored in the area. While secondary lines come on, some taps may still be out.

While downed power lines might look harmless, always assume that they are still energized. Downed lines can still carry an electric current strong enough to cause serious injury and possible death.

If you come across a downed power line CLP says to follow these important tips:

  • Move away from the line: Do not touch anything that may be in contact with the line
  • Properly move away from an energized line: Shuffle with small steps, keep feet together and on the ground at all times- this will minimize the potential for strong electric shock. Electricity wants to move from high voltage to low.
  • Call 911 if someone is in direct or indirect contact with line
  • Do not attempt to move a downed power line
  • Do not drive over downed lines: If you vehicle does come in contact with a downed line, stay in the vehicle. If you must leave your vehicle due to fire, jump out of the vehicle with both feet together and avoid making contact with the vehicle and the ground at the same time.
