Maria Bamford’s Duluth Family Talks Netflix’s ‘Lady Dynamite’

Bamford Moved To Duluth At 3 Years Old

Stand-up comedian Maria Bamford, who was raised in the Duluth at the age of 3, is debuting her first-ever Netflix series Friday called “Lady Dynamite.”

FOX 21’s Dan Hanger met up Bamford’s parents and sister Thursday who said they are more than proud of Maria. But her father, Joel, was showing a little limelight jealousy — all in fun of course.

“When is she going to set it up that I get my actors guild,” Joel joked.

“Oh, I think it’s amazing. What a wonderful opportunity for her to get out in front of so many people at one time, because she has so many strong messages to help people and she’s funny – hilarious,” Joel later clarified.
“Lady Dynamite” is all about Maria Bamford’s life and her struggle with bi-polar disorder and depression – all with a strong flare of comedy.

Her family says the Netflix opportunity comes after Maria launched the “Maria Bamford Show” on YouTube after not getting picked up for any sitcoms.

“Kind of a great encouragement to all of us who are creating, like you know what, if nobody’s handing you the contract or the deal, go out and make it yourself because once she did that, ya know, people loved it,” said Sarah Seidelmann, Maria’s sister.

“She helps people come to a place where they can poke a little fun of their own illness and that’s the beginning of healing in my mind — if people can laugh,” said Marilyn Bamford, Maria’s mother.

Catch 13 episodes of “Lady Dynamite” streaming on Netflix Friday.
