The “Iceman” Will Not Return to Superior

The Superior City Council voted not to renew Roger “The Iceman” Hanson’s contract for a third year.

This decision comes mainly because of the cost, his contract increased to $60,000 which is $15,000 more than last year and double his first year.

The equipment Hanson uses to make the ice sculpture comes with a hefty price tag plus he lived on the site for several months at a time.

All of this, plus, the weather hasn’t been on his side the past couple of years.

There were a couple of times when his creation collapsed at its Barker’s Island location.

The city would like to move forward and look for other tourism possibilities.

Linda Cadotte, the Director of Parks and Recreation in Superior, said “In the next few weeks if people have ideas and would like to see a winter festival we would love to hear from them. Not only hear their needs, but their desire to help and organize.”

Cadotte also added that the money for Hanson’s contract was designated from Hotel Motel Tax and Tourist Development Foundation so it can’t be used for things such as potholes and planting trees.

If you are interested in contributing ideas, you can contact Cadotte during business hours. Her number is (715) 395-7270.
