Truck Barrels into Crowd Following Bastille Fireworks in France
At least 84 people are dead after truck loaded with weapons plows into crowd
A truck drove onto the sidewalk and plowed through a crowd of Bastille Day revelers who had gathered to watch fireworks in the French resort city of Nice late Thursday in what some officials and eyewitnesses described as a deliberate attack.
The President of the Nice region said at least 84 people were killed, and wounding 202 others. French leaders have extended a state of emergency imposed after the November 13 Paris attacks and vowed to deploy thousands of police reservists on the streets.
A ranking regional politician confirmed the death toll to the Associated Press. Regional president Christian Estrosi called Thursday, “the worst tragedy in the history of Nice,” and asked residents to stay indoors after the attack.
French Interior Ministry spokesman Pierre-Henry Brandet said the truck diver had been “neutralized” and an investigation would confirm whether he had acted alone. The Paris prosecutor’s office announced that it was opening an anti-terrorism investigation into the Nice attack.
The attack happened at around 10:30 p.m. local time Thursday night. A local government official told Fox News that the truck was driving full speed when it hit the crowd.
July 14 is a national holiday in France that commemorates the storming of the Bastille prison in Paris and the start of the French Revolution.
