4H Helps Area Youth Prepare for Future Careers

Many youth use the experience to prepare for college and as a resume builder.

4H brings leadership and other skills that go well beyond the barn, field, and classroom.

The program leaves a lasting legacy on those who wear the clover.

While his rabbit, Ruby, looked like it could take center stage at any time, it took a lot of work by Colten Moshier to get it there.

“It’s a lot of work. It’s a daily thing,” said Moshier.

Moshier has been in 4H for most of his life, but still has to explain its impact to his friends.

“Almost no one knows what it is or what 4H really puts on the State Fair or any of the county fairs,” said Moshier.

150 kids make up the South St. Louis County 4H program.

“The sense of community 4H brings, it’s really a connected group where everybody really knows each other and sees each other all around the community and it connects all the schools,” said Moshier.

The hard work from the entire year goes into the ring at the county fair.

“It’s a lot and it can get stressful at times but it’s all fun,” said Ilsa Johnson.

Then for the lucky few, it’s onto the great Minnesota-Get-Together, the State Fair. In St. Paul, they will compete against 4Her’s from all across the state, but also also make new friendships.

“It’s busy. It’s hot, but I like being there and being part of that crowd,” said Shea Moshier.

Many point to their 4H experiences on college resumes. They say it helps build character and determination.

Many also learn time management and they have to balance project after project.

“It’s been really hectic trying to get projects done,” said Laura Johnson.

Johnson enjoys showing in 4H and sharing her knowledge of agriculture.

“I’m pretty much the only one, so I have to tell people what agriculture is and really tell them where their food comes from,” said Johnson.

While the cutoff for 4H is a year after high school, many say they are sad to go but know the lessons learned will never leave.

“It’s going to be hard that’s for sure,” said Moshier.

Ruby may hop her way to state, but only on the tails of a talented 4Her.
