Sawyer County Court Clerk is Victim of Murder-Suicide

Claudia Burgan was killed in an apparent murder-suicide in rural Hayward.

The Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office responded to a murder-suicide near Hayward. The victim is Claudia Burgan who was shot and killed on Twin Lakes Road near Hayward.

Burgan was the clerk of the court for Sawyer County. Investigators believe Burgan was killed by Dennis Meyer who lived with Burgan. Meyer is believed to have then shot and killed himself.

Burgan is being remembered as a dedicated public servant who served the needs of Sawyer County for nearly twenty years.

News of the event took the community by surprise.

“There is nobody else that you could find that was more by the book or had more knowledge about the overall operation of the clerk’s office,” said Sawyer Co. Circuit Court Judge John Yackel.

Co-workers called Burgan dedicated and a task manager who loved her job.

“Everyone respected her and her ability and we’re still grieving today,” said Yackel.

Community members commented on Facebook calling Burgan a loving mother, aunt, and grandmother.

“I was leaving and I said goodnight to her to Claudia and said thank you for staying late tonight, we’ll see you tomorrow and tomorrow never came,” said Yackel.

The Sawyer County Sheriff’s Office says the case is still under investigation.
