Debris Cleanup Continues A Month After July Storms

Debris Dropoff Sites Remain Open Until Early September

Debris continues to pile up now more than a month after severe thunderstorms devastated several communities in the Northland.

At one debris drop off site just off Rice Lake Road in Duluth, the pile is nearly ten feet high and it continues to grow.

Those that live in this community are still shocked by how they’re still affected by that July storm.

“There’s still a lot to be picked up around the city,” said Duluth native Scott Wies. “It’s hard to believe how much damage was done.”

Wies says his house wasn’t horribly affected; he was without power for four days and had a few trees down.

He is understanding of how long it has taken the city to address the damage.

“They’ve had their work cut out for them and we’ve had a few storms that have taken trees down,” Wies said. “I guess you have to give them some slack that way…I’m sure they’re doing all they can.”

City crews are hoping to complete picking up curbside debris by August 28.

Drop off sites like the one on Rice Lake will remain open until September 3.
