CHUM Stocks Food Shelf for Winter

The Goal is to Raise 27,000 Pounds

In Northeastern Minnesota almost 50,000 people live in poverty, so food shelves, like CHUM, are looking to stock up before winter hits.

Volunteers and boy scouts were at grocery stores in Duluth today, encouraging people to donate cash, or to grab an extra bag of groceries to donate to people in need. They even handed flyers with a list of groceries that the food shelves are looking for.

“People at CHUM that are homeless or poor need money, so I thought that that would be a helpful thing to do,” said Elliot, a boy scout.

The boy scouts have a goal of raising 27 thousand pounds of food for the drive. The food that is donated goes directly to local food shelves to help low-income and homeless people.

“It makes you feel good,” said Henry, a boy scout.

“Yeah it makes me feel good that I’m helping people and that they’re getting food,” said Leif, also a boy scout.

Last year the food drive raised 26 thousand pounds of food

The Hermantown Food Shelf and the Salvation Army food shelf were also part of the food drive.
