Front Yard Parking Enforcement to be Delayed
Enforcement to Begin June 1st
Parking on lawns has been against city code since the 1950’s, and this year, the city of Duluth announced they would step up their enforcement for front yard parking.
But upon receiving requests from landlords and tenants to give them more time to figure out parking situations, the city announced they will be pushing back the enforcement until June 1st of next year, when new leases begin.
“We started a petition about this exact problem, and the solution, and they have granted exactly what we were asking for,” said Mike Purtell, the Vice President of External Affairs for the UMD Student Association.
And while it only buys residents without parking spaces a few months to figure out what they can do, officials say the front yard parking enforcement is a safety issue.
“So Somebody’s having a medical issue and they’ve got to take an extra 20 seconds or 30 seconds to get in there and respond to it properly, that could be a life or death situation,” said Keith Hamre, the Director of Construction and Planning Services for the City of Duluth.
The citation for front yard parking is 24 dollars.
Once the front yard parking is enforced, landlords or homeowners who have cars parked on their lawns can receive administrative citations of 200 dollars.
