First Time Voters Head to the Polls

Young Voters are Turning Out to Vote

The eyes of people across the world are on our Nation tonight, as voters continue to cast their ballots. And this election cycle, a large number of young voters are making sure their voices are heard.

Millennials comprise around 31 percent of the population eligible to vote, though that number wasn’t close to the number of Millennials who voted in 2012. But with the power of social media, many people believer more young people have taken interest in politics this election cycle.

“I missed it yeah by about a month the last presidential election so I decided to vote this year,” said Taylor Johnshoy a student.

Many issues that young people care about, like college tuition, and minimum wage have been hot button topics in the debates between the candidates, so a large number of young people were excited to play their role in democracy.

“It was actually a lot easier than I expected. I didn’t really. I mean I registered but I was surprised I didn’t have to show my id when I walked in, and there wasn’t many lines,” said Abbey Quinnell, a student from UMD.

Last election cycle, only around 45 percent of eligible young voters cast their ballot.

Minnesota had the 3rd highest voting rate of young adults last presidential election. In the studio I’m Lena Takada KQDS FOX 21.
