Free Collection and Recycling of Holiday Lights
Offered by the Carlton County Transfer Station
The Carlton County Transfer Station on Highway 210 is offering a collection and recycling of holiday lights for those who may have a pile of burned out lights or are looking to make the switch to energy-efficient LED lights.
The estimated electric bill for lighting a six-foot tree with incandescent lights for 12 hours a day for 40 days is around $10. Switching to LED lights can drop that bill to just $0.27. So if you’re planning to make the switch, they’re encouraging individuals to recycle their lights, rather than throw them in the trash.
Karola Dalen, Carlton County Resource and Recycling Coordinator says, “By recycling holiday lights, companies can extract the valuable copper, and less valuable glass and plastic for reuse. Recycling metals saves a tremendous amount of energy compared to mining new resources.”
The Carlton County Transfer Station will provide FREE collection of lights until January 31,2017. The station is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.
