UMD Political Science Professor Speaks on Election Results

A Breakdown of the 2016 Election

It may be hard to believe, but campaign season is officially over and the 2016 election results are in.

This morning, UMD Assistant Professor, Geoff Sheagley, visited FOX 21 to discuss the outcome.

Donald Trump won key states to clinch the presidency, “I think people saw a path for him, but I don’t think they thought it would be quite that strong of a path,” Sheagley said.

Sheagley said Trump did well with states in the Midwest and Rust Belt area, “Part of what we’re seeing in this election is it’s continuing to play out this urban-rural divide that we’ve seen. You can view a lot of those states in the same way that we would say Minneapolis versus the rest of Minnesota in terms of blue versus red. That’s one of the galvanizing forces behind his support. It was that sort of rural white voters in particular really strongly supported him and turned out to vote.”

Trump became the President of the United States with 274 electoral votes, while Clinton received 218.
