Carlton County Historical Society Honors Veterans

This year's program looked at the achievements of six local veterans.

While Veterans Day honors the duty and sacrifice of all veterans, the Carlton County Historical Society decided to take a deeper look at six area veterans.

The veterans are a part of the Power of Pins exhibit at the museum which takes a look at pins of all kinds. The pins of the veterans were pins of achievement, ones only they could earn.

Hearing the names of family members and friends on the Veterans Day brought many memories back of those who wore the uniform for their country.

One of the six the historical society honored was Geneva Louise Wimmer who served in the Coast Guard.

“As I look back how she was so devoted and it was so wonderful, she was so devoted,” said Marilyn Johnson, Geneva’s daughter.

Geneva served in Palm Beach, Florida. After she returned home to Minnesota, she continued to work with veterans

“I always used to kind of think maybe the veterans are more important than family but that wasn’t the case she was a wonderful mother too,” said Johnson.

As names and accomplishments were read, the county marked their important history.

One veteran who attended the event was Charles Beberg. He came to hear the stories of his brothers and sisters in arms.

“I was in three deals where I had to go and be ready and it’s enough to scare the heck out of you,” said Beberg.

Veterans shared why the joined the service and the history they dedicated their lives to protect, so future generations could continue their memories.

“Veterans were such a big part of her life and she wanted to be helpful for the veterans and do what she could,” said Johnson.
