Chronic Wasting Disease hits Minnesota

Two deer test positive in Minnesota

Test results have shown that two deer harvested in southeastern Minnesota have chronic wasting disease.

The deer were hunted earlier this month during the firearms deer season.

They are the only deer to test positive for this fatal brain disease this year in Minnesota.

“What it means is we are going to implement our CWD management plan which is going to call for creating a zone to manage and eliminate disease,” said Dr. Lou Cornicelli, DNR wildlife research manager. “We will be looking at working with hunters and landowners in that zone to collect additional samples and also start thinking about lowering the deer population.”

The DNR in Wisconsin has also reported finding deer with the disease.
