Changes coming to one-way streets in Downtown Duluth

City council approved a three phase project to convert from one way to two way streets

Changes Coming to Duluth One Way StreetsDrivers in downtown Duluth won’t have to deal with as many one way roads. Last week, city council approved a three phase project to convert portions of First, Second and Third Avenues West from one to two way traffic.

The project is set to begin May of 2017. When all’s done, stop lights at seven intersections will change to stop signs. The city hopes the changes will cut down on confusion for drivers.

“It will make it easier on drivers downtown, make it easier for when you’re trying to find something with circulation patterns, really trying to make it user friendly,” says Keith Hamre, Director of Planning and Construction Services for the City of Duluth. “In this process we want to make sure we’re taking care of pedestrians too, so that’s why we’re going to do it in a phased approach and watch these intersections, observe and see how they’re working.”

City officials say visitors using the downtown roadways were confused by the current one way system. They hope this project will make the area safer for all drivers and pedestrians.
