‘Ugly’ Christmas Sweaters Popular With Holiday Shoppers

Today is "National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day"

DULUTH, Minn. — Known for their bright colors and super-creative designs, vintage Christmas sweaters have become hugely popular.

And today is “National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day.”

Whether it’s for the nostalgia, or just because you think the over-the-top fashions are just fun to wear, the popularity of Christmas sweaters has exploded in the past few years.

At Ragstock in Duluth, Christmas is the second busiest time of the year.

And the managers there have been getting ready for the holidays for quite some time now.

“We get our stock of Christmas sweaters a good two months in advance,” said store manager Garrett Passer.  “And our warehouse is really awesome and they sort it out for us, and they send us these giant boxes.”

We caught up with Duluth native Jordan Hanson, who is planning an ugly sweater party this weekend.

She and a friend were gleefully looking at the myriad of sweaters, each a bit more tacky than the other.

“Maybe it’s because I’m a Millennial, but they’re so farfetched to me in some aspect,” Hanson said.  “They just look funny!”

Passer says that it’s very popular for people to get sweaters with bells and even blinking lights, but those designs are a little more expensive.

“I think honestly it’s like you put on a costume,” he said.  “You know, with Christmas it’s not as big as Halloween, so you have to have something to throw on and kind of have camaraderie with it.”
