Ice Orbs Are Gathering for Art Collaborative at Lake Superior Ice Fest

SUPERIOR, Wis. — It’s getting colder and colder this week, which is wonderful news for those organizing the Lake Superior Ice Festival, taking place this weekend.

Preschool children from Superior delivered dozens of frozen ice orbs to the festival grounds on Barkers Island earlier this morning.

It’s the first of a group of community members that have frozen water balloons to make more than 365 orbs for a community art collaborative called “Orb 365.”

Each of the ice orbs represents a day of the year that clean water is important to Lake Superior, said Andrea Crouse, Water Resources Specialist with the City of Superior Public Works Department.

During the festival, the orbs will be arranged and illuminated at night.

“Each of these orbs is small and by themselves might not look like a lot, but together it’s filling up this whole area to look like Lake Superior,” Crouse said.

Nearly 450 orbs have been donated so far and they are still accepting orbs if you’d like to contribute.

Frozen water balloons can be delivered to Crouse and her team on Barkers Island during the day tomorrow.

“When we start pooling our resources, we all learn a little bit from each other in the process,” Crouse said.
