Girl Scouts began selling their delicious cookies in 1917 and now 100 years later, the tradition is still going strong.
The cookies have arrived and orders will start going out this Saturday. A lot goes into the annual sale. Each troop’s profit goes far beyond money. They get the rewards of leadership, responsibility, and friendships that will last a lifetime.
Troop 4156 unloaded their shipment of over 2,500 boxes of Girl Scout cookies on Thursday night. The girls had fun, but most importantly learned leadership skills and responsibility.
“You get to be with your friends and you get to learn the experience of selling and how you sell and like the process of it,” said Girl Scout Alyssa Yokom.
It’s more than just the art of the sale. “I really want to sell like 500 or 200, just a high goal because last year I didn’t sell that much but we sold a lot still together,” said Girl Scout Sophie Johnson.
The Girl Scouts raise money to not only travel and go to camp, but also to help their community. “When you go to camps, you get to spend lots of time with your friends and you get the experience of Girl Scouts and selling cookies because it’s something to do in February, March,” said Girl Scout Jadyn Lind.
The thirteen sixth graders and one fifth grader work individually and as a troop to reach their goals. “I like to thank them because they’re using their money that they worked very hard for and it’s just special to us because we get to use that money towards other people or something we get in return,” said Girl Scout Natalya Hooey.
They sell sweets, but the benefits they reap are the real treats that come box by box. “You get to just be yourself and you don’t have to fit in with everyone like at school. At Girl Scouts you get to be yourself,” said Johnson.
The Girl Scouts will begin their booth sales next week on Thursday. Troop 4156 made over $2,500. They used that money to help make a trip to Chicago last year.
