Student Killed in Shooting was Son of St. Paul Police Sergeant

DULUTH, Minn. – The 22-year-old victim in Tuesday’s shooting, has been identified as William Andrew Grahek, a Duluth resident.

Authorities have stated that no suspect is in custody at this time, and the investigation continues to be very active at this time as they follow up with numerous leads.

Grahek is the son of St. Paul Police Sergeant Jon Grahek, and grew up in Centerville, Minnesota, graduating from Centennial High School. He was attending the University of Minnesota Duluth and served as a specialist with the 312th Army Reserve Engineer Company.

The University of Minnesota Duluth’s Vice Chancellor Student Life and Dean of Students Dr. Lisa Erwin released the following statement, “The campus community mourns the loss of Will Grahek and our hearts and deepest condolences go out to his family and friends. We will continue to provide resources and support to the campus through the grieving process.”

The 312th Engineer Company Captain Chad Nixon released the following, “First and foremost, our hearts, thoughts, and prayers go out to the Grahek Family. William was a model Soldier, hard worker, and great friend to many here at the 312th Engineer Company.”

“The St. Paul Police Department extends their deepest condolences to the family,” the department said in a statement Wednesday. “The department will do all it can to support Sgt. Grahek and his loved ones during this difficult time and asks that everyone keep them in their prayers.”

The Graheks do not wish to make a public statement at this time, other than to say that they loved William very much and to thank everyone who has reached out to them with comforting words and support.

The family is asking for privacy at this time, as they mourn their loss.
