Wild Winter Temperature Swings Have Been Damaging to Plants, Experts Say
HERMANTOWN, Minn. —
We have seen some pretty dramatic temperature swings this winter, which, according to some experts, has not been good for our plants or lawns.
At Miller Creek Lawn and Landscape in Hermantown, all the plants are buried under snow, which is good for the plants that need to lay dormant during the winter.
Landscape Architect Trish Crego says if you have exposed plants outside your house, it’s best to either cover them with snow, or find another way to keep them covered as these temperature swings continue.
“When the snow melts away, it takes away their protection. It’s literally like ripping off a blanket in the morning,” Crego said. “If you want to protect your plants, take all the snow off your walks and put them on your beds so they stay covered the longest during this odd season.”
Crego says it’s not too soon to start planning your landscaping for the warmer months.
