Duluth Recognizes State-Wide Day of Action

Domestic Violence Action Day was Designed to Raise Awareness

DULUTH, Minn. – Local leaders and community organizations answered the call on a day of action to raise awareness for domestic violence Tuesday.

The event on the steps of City Hall was one of more than 80 planned state-wide.

The Safe Haven Resource Center, along with other community groups organized the event designed to honor victims of domestic violence and help prevent future assaults.

“It’s a day to bring awareness, remind people that it is still happening at an alarming rate,” said Heather Drees, Legal Advocacy Supervisor for Safe Haven.  “And also to remember those who have been victims of murder in the state of Minnesota.”

The rally gave the community a chance to call on lawmakers to maintain crucial funding for victim’s services.

“It’s a really powerful feeling, knowing that out community stands with us and stands with victims and survivors,” said Kristi Beaver, Community Education and Development Coordinator for Safe Haven.  “Empathy is how we begin this work of ending domestic violence and stand together as a community.”

Earned sick and safe time was another topic discussed as the City of Duluth continues working toward its own resolution on the issue.
