Pi Day Celebrations

It's an Unofficial Holiday Across the Country

SUPERIOR, Wis. – It’s Pi Day today as math lovers celebrate the unofficial holiday across the country.

The holiday celebrates the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter, or 3.14.

One local college math department always has some fun events planned for the holiday, whether it’s eating pie or even making jewelry. A lot of the events are held to make math more accessible to students.

“I think there is a mystery about math in general… it kind of calms down because people feel it’s more accessible, but I feel it’s received well because every time you give someone food, it usually makes them happy,” said Heather Kahler, senior math lecturer at the University of Wisconsin-Superior.

What makes the number so interesting, according to local math experts, is it never truly ends which means you are always learning more about it.

Wisconsin Indianhead Technical College also celebrated the day with a pie making contest.

Staff and students took part in the contest, which featured recipes from banana cream to Heath bar.

Students got to enjoy the hard work of these bakers.

“They’re all free which is a great thing – not the main thing,” said WITC student Jovann McKnight. “We all get to sit here and try all these different kinds of pie and they are all good…everyone did great. All the pies are delicious so it’s fun.”

Members of the WITC community made the competition similar to shows like “Chopped” or “Cupcake Wars.”
