Local Leaders United Against Trump Budget

Duluth Mayor Says Budget has Serious Implications for City

DULUTH, Minn. – Duluth and St. Louis County officials voiced concerns over the proposed federal budget at a unique press conference Tuesday morning at City Hall.

Duluth Mayor Emily Larson was joined by nearly 40 representatives from various state, county and city organizations.
President Donald Trump’s proposed budget calls for massive cuts to nearly every federal department.  Mayor Larson is concerned what those cuts would mean for the city if the budget remains as–is.

“My job is to advocate for this community and to ensure that we are speaking to their values,” said Mayor Larson.  “This budget does not match the values of this community and it will impact us in ways that will take us significantly backwards.”

Joining the local leaders were representatives from Congressman Rick Nolan and Senator Amy Klobuchar’s offices.

Duluth City Council President Joel Sipress believes Democratic and Republican lawmakers should unite against this budget.

“It’s going to take us working across party lines to prevent this assault on the people of this community from succeeding,” said Sipress.

As part of State of the City address Monday night, Mayor Larson called for unity.  Tuesday she joked this proposed budget gave an almost immediate opportunity for the city to present a unified message.
